Basic Safety Tips for First Time Solo Travelers

For a solo or single traveller, the primary concern should be safety. Most countries have different cultures and laws that an individual has to be aware of, and if you respect and follow them, your trip is only going to be more enjoyable. When you’re traveling solo, you’re more vulnerable to criminals and scam artists, and you’re also prone health concerns. With awareness, there are also some fundamental safety tips that should be kept in mind whether you’re traveling solo, in a group or safest country in the country in the world.

You never know what’s possible, so I’ve compiled a list to keep in mind while travelling.

  • Do your research. I believe in spontaneity but before you plan on going on anywhere do some research on the country/city/town. There are millions of books, blogs and articles around. Find out how long it takes from the airport to your hostel, get an understanding of the currency rate and ask the cab driver for itself how much it would cost.
  • Be sensible. It is understandable that everyone wants to fun and a good time, but you have to keep in mind that you’re travelling alone and you need to cautious of your surroundings.
  • Take out printouts of your identification and health cards and email them to your close one.
  • Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it.
  • Smile. People are always ready to help and when you’re friendly people will always return the favor.
  • Avoid appearing like a tourist. Avoid wearing flashy clothes and jewelry. Like every country, there are pickpockets and their main targets are tourists.
  • Find locals. The world has become incredibly smaller with social media and networks, don’t be shy to contact friends or friends of friends in the region.
